~ Homemade sun dried tomatoes using my dehydrator ~The sun dried tomatoes you buy at the market are usually made with sulphites. I have tried making raw marinara sauce with sun dried tomatoes and the sulphites usually upset my stomach. The chemicals overpower the taste in the sauce. I wasn't sure all that went into making my own, but gave it a try. I was surprised how easy it was!
I put together a mixture of seasonings and olive oil to baste my tomato slices. I thought it would enhance the flavour.
I placed the tomatoes on the teflex sheets because they were wet to begin with. I left them on the paper all day for about twelve hours at 114 degrees....
After three hours the tomatoes began to dry around the edges a little....
As you can see the rims of the tomatoes are darker red than when I first began. They dry from the outside towards the center....
This is what they looked likfe after 16 hours of dehydrating ....
These dried tomatoes could probably use a little more drying, but I was satisfied. My husband tried them and he said they taste really good, similar to what you buy but no harsh chemical that leaves a bad after taste. My son is afraid of tomatoes, but he was willing to smell them and he said they smell like pizza.
Delicious sundried tomatoes! *YUMMY*
ReplyDeleteA few months ago I found sundried tomatoes unsulphured. Thanks for sharing!
Brightest Blessings~
YAY! I've been planning to make my own sundried tomatoes, you've totally inspired me to get to it. I love sun dried tomatoes but they are SO expensive, like 20 dollars for a tiny pack. Obscene! Making my own is for sure the way to go.
